Deutsch Drahthaar (DD)

Deutsch Drahthaar (DD) - dogs registered with the Country of origin’s (Germany) breed club and tested under the breeding regulations.

German wirehaired pointer (GWP) - dogs not bred to the regulations of the German breed club.

Derived from the wirehaired breeds of Pudelpointer, Griffon (Korthals) and Stichelhaar as well as an infusion of Deutsch Kurzhaar, the Germans produced a tough, strong dog with a weather resistant coat. Neither shy nor aggressive but protective of family and possessions, the DD/GWP resembles in type the DK/GSP.

The DD is a dog that will track wounded game and pull it down if able, kill foxes, wild cats and vermin and can retrieve from cold water. The DD/GWP is also a hunter of upland game and will point and retrieve fur and feather. Generally a moderately ranging dog that has not been “adapted” toward a more pointer specialist type.

The skull is flat with slightly rounded sides. A noticeable stop where the skull and muzzle meet made more obvious by the bone development of the upper eye ridges and the bushy eyebrows.
The muzzle is long, broad and deep with males often having a slight convex curve (rams nose).
Lips are tight fitting, ears moderate size set high, eyes dark.

Chest is broad rather than narrow and deep with some tuck up apparent in the flank. This should not begin behind the elbow but the brisket should extend far back.

Coat is wiry, tight, harsh and close fitting, 2 – 4 cm long with a thick undercoat. The coat on the head and legs is shorter but still dense and harsh. Bushy eyebrows and harsh beard.

Movement has powerful drive in the hindlegs, and the carriage is proud.

Colour is liver (brown) with or without patches, or roan (mix of liver & white hair). Black as per liver.

Size: dogs 61-68 cm
bitches 57-64cm
