that Vizslas are lap dogs!
It has been a great time for overseas visitors. The first
one was a visiting Hungarian judge.
Erdosne Dr Zsuzsanna Balogh (uses both names as her
married surname is Erdos and the 'ne' on the end means
Mrs, and her maiden surname - and professional name as
a Doctor of Law - is Balogh) is the President of the
Hungarian Kennel Club's Judges Committee. Zsuzsanna's
husband (Laslos) is also a multi group judge so they travel
quite extensively over Europe. Well the weekend of Jan
31st, Feb 1st we have been lucky enough to have her
judging in 2 All Breed champ shows in New Zealand.
To make it even better she judged Gundogs on Saturday
and she is a breeder of Vizslas!! Getting a Vizsla
specialist judge in New Zealand is just brilliant! Of course,
since we were showing under her, we could not meet
Zsuzsanna properly until after the shows.
Saturday morning we arrived early (bright hadn't hit in
yet). I had entered Ch Barat Amber Flight (Flight) & Barat
Amber Flame (Flame) and was there with Jan Edwards
who had entered four of her dogs - Ch Ruby Roze of
Szep-Allat (Roze), Ch Suave Joe of Szep-Allat (Joe), NZ
Ch Hubertus Claim to Fame Imp Aust (Fame) and
Agasvari Ruby Rosely (Mouse). Also entered was another
of Jan's breeding (litter sister to Joe), Scarlett of
Szep-Allat (Scarlett) owned by Rod Hitchmough, and
another Australian import, Gonnylde By Fig Tree Imp Aust
(pet name unknown by me) owned by Brenda Wilkin.
Roze took Best Bitch and Joe Best Dog with Flight taking
Reserve Dog and Fame Reserve bitch. Open of breed
was Fame, Intermediate was Roze, NZ Bred was Flame,
Junior was Joe ... and we had no pups entered. On to
Group judging we were beaten to the draw by a Labrador
for Best of Group but Roze took Reserve of Group &
Intermediate of Group while Fame was awarded Open of
Group.
The other 2 shows during the weekend were a gundog
specialty where Roze took Best in Specialty Show! And
another all breed champ show on Sunday saw Roze taken
best of group AND Reserve in SHOW!
Editors wistful comment: One day I plan to have Flight or
Flame (and our new addition Spirit) doing that also!
The plan was that the judge came back on Sunday after
the show to stay with Yvonne Barton and the Vizsla
people entertain her for a couple of nights.
Photo: Zsuzsanna relaxing with Yvonne Barton's pup, Tosca.
Zsuzsanna does speak only broken English but once we
had all relaxed from a hectic weekend of showing and
judging we found that communication became quite
straight forward. Yvonne is such a lovely, friendly person
with a very OUTGOING husband that it would be
impossible not to feel at home with them. And added to
this was little Tosca (Yvonne's pup) who quite stole
Zsuzsanna's heart! I think that Yvonne searched the
luggage before Zsuzsanna's departure to ensure that no
little orange live wire was packed to smuggle away.
Actually there were several dogs during the time that I
think Zsuzsanna was quite keen to take home!
Zsuzsanna was perfectly content to spend her time
relaxing, watching pups and adult V's (including a lovely
walk and (dog) swim at the lake with 7 adult V's all having
a JOYOUS time), looking at photos of NZ Vizslak over the
years and talking about her dogs and ours! A trip tow
watch the local cows being milked and a dinner out were
the extent of her sightseeing but hopefully she enjoyed
her stay in NZ as much as we enjoyed meeting and
spending time with her.
The next Vizsla visitors were Michelle and John Taylor
from Gamefinder kennels in Australia (breeding both
Vizslas and Labradors). Over for a family and sightseeing
visit to New Zealand (John is an expat NZ'er who hasn't
been back since 1976; Michelle has never been here
before), they may have seen some family but most of
their sightseeing was dog shows and Vizsla visiting!
Anyone watching their holiday videos and photos will think
that NZ is totally overrun by Vizslas!
This delightful couple spent time with Val Aubrey and her
dog Luka, met Darryl Walker and Rumer at an Auckland
dog show and stayed with us (meeting up with Jan
Edwards and Sharon Gillespie and their dogs) for several
nights and attended the Tokoroa shows on Saturday
giving them a chance to watch New Zealand history in the
making and helping us to celebrate the occasion on
Saturday night!!
An added benefit to owning Vizslas is the nice people you
meet who also own and love them!
